Susan Scann's Biography

Although I was born in Riverdale, Maryland, I was raised and have lived in the West since the age of two. I am the oldest of five sisters who grew up in Salt Lake City. I attended Seattle University and graduated from University of Washington with a BA in 1968. After college I worked as a technical writer in the computer department of Boeing as a third generation Boeing worker. My grandmother was a “Rosie the Riveter “ in World War II.

In 1971 I moved to Hawaii to escape the rain. Hawaii is a wonderful and expensive place to live. When I decided to go to law school, I returned to the mainland to attend California Western School of Law. While enrolled at California Western, I was a member of the law review; a staff member from 1974 through 1975 and a member of the Board of Editors from 1975 to 1976. My case note, “Tucker v. Lassen, Due on Sale Clauses and Land Sale Contracts - A Victory for the Consumer Buyer”, was published in 11 California Western Law Review 578 in 1975.

I received my law degree in 1976. I passed the California Bar in 1976 prior to my move to Las Vegas. By that time, the population of California was already swelling, as was the number of lawyers there. As a result, I interviewed in Northern California, Northern Nevada and Las Vegas. Las Vegas was a small, warm and friendly place in 1976 with a great legal community. I also had the benefit of being close to my parents and sisters in Salt Lake City and California. By the way, the legal community here is still great.

After one year of clerking, I took and passed the Nevada Bar in 1977. I have practiced in Nevada ever since, first, with Jones, Jones, Bell, Close & Brown (now Jones Vargas), then in 1984, with Deaner & Deaner. I am presently a partner, shareholder and President of Deaner, Deaner, Scann, Malan & Larsen located at 720 South Fourth Street, Las Vegas, Nevada, a civil law firm which emphasizes on real estate practice. My practice areas include real estate, general commercial litigation, bankruptcy litigation and creditor representation. I have had approximately one hundred civil trials and a multitude of pretrial and other related court hearings over my thirty-one years of practice.

I was appointed an Alternate Municipal Court Judge for the City of Las Vegas in 1980. This consists of presiding over arraignments, misdemeanor criminal trials and follow up hearings to ensure that fines are paid, court ordered counseling sessions and other sentencing requirements are completed. I continue to serve in that capacity.

I met my husband here in Las Vegas in 1978. He is a musician who worked full time in the house band at Caesar’s Palace. He has played with many of the great entertainers performing in Las Vegas. He also enjoyed exploring and fishing in the outdoors. Both of our children, Brian, 25 and Kathryn, 22, were born and raised here in Las Vegas, Nevada. Now that my children are adults, I am able to be more active in our community. I have graduated from soccer, PTA and school boards to Soroptimist International, the Clark County Bar CLE Committee and church activities.

After the 1984 Musician’s strike, my husband returned to University of Nevada Las Vegas and obtained a teaching certificate. He is now a teacher in the Clark County School District, soon to be retired. Las Vegas, Nevada has been wonderful to my husband, myself and my children. I would be deeply honored and proud to serve this community in the capacity of District Court Judge in Department 25.
